What are the different types of Motorhome and Campervan Awnings? There are four main types of motorhome and campervan awnings and these are:
Each has a specific role to play and is one of the most essential Camper Van & Motorhome accessories; they provide invaluable space for entertaining, shelter from the elements, increase sleeping capacity as well as additional storage space.
If you are unsure what size awning you will need for your van, please follow this link to see How to Measure your Motorhome or Campervan for an Awning.
Similar in principle to a tent, with the addition of a cowl that creates a passage between the body of the awning and the vehicle (please note, this does not create a perfect seal, the cowl simply provides protection between the van and awning). The cowl can be detached from the vehicle and rolled away, allowing the vehicle, and awning, to be used independently.
Like tents, driveaway awnings come in various shapes, sizes and configorations, to provide a wide variety of sleeping, storage or entertaining space.
Drive Away awnings are generally supplied with either an air, carbon/fibre, or steel frame.

A Traditional awning provides a more structured setup for longer stays, ideal for a two-week vacation; however, this type of awning will require packing down, if you wish to use your vehicle during your stay. Traditional motorhome awnings are made of heavier weight fabric, and this should be taken into consideration when purchasing, as it does take longer to put up than a driveaway awning and is easier with two people.
A canopy awning is generally attached as a permanent fixture to the vehicle, rolling away into its own case on the side of the motorhome; the market leading brands being Thule and Fiamma. We would always suggest getting a canopy fitted by a professional, rather than attempting to fit one yourself.
The canopy winds out, from the side of the vehicle, and has two supporting legs to provide shelter from the sun; ideal for shelter from the summer sun; sides can be purchased separately to convert into an awning; giving additional storage or sleeping space.
If you require the use of the Motorhome, simply wind the awning back to the vehicle, and head away for the day.
Tailgate Awnings are exactly the same principle and benefits as a drive away awning but has a longer cowl to go on to the rear door of the vehicle for access.
